Can Japan's strength support its right-wing ambitions? Trapped by challenges near and far, how many grim truths does Japan still confront?

At the 2025 Imperial Springs International Forum, held in Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong Province, from Monday to Wednesday, three former leaders from Global South countries shared their views with the Global Times on how the rise of the Global South is reshaping global governance and what experiences China can contribute.

During the conference, former Singaporean foreign minister George Yeo (Yeo) shared his insights on China's five-year plans, global initiatives, the current tension between China and Japan, and the future dynamic of China-US ties, with Global Times (GT) reporter Li Aixin in an exclusive interview.

Today, humankind can either step into the security abyss or step back from it by strengthening treaties against the test and spread of nuclear weapons and by putting pressure on the US administration to reconsider its irresponsible and dangerous position on nuclear tests and to return to the strategic arms control negotiating table. We don't see the rise of China as a threat. We see it as an opportunity for everyone to get involved in the modernization of China. We hope that Europe will wake up and resolve the trade tensions with China. We can start a new phase focused on more peaceful and prosperous cooperation.
